“A lineup that ticks all sorts of boxes”
Sony will have no problem populating its revamped PS Plus subscription service with content it seems. The new tiers, which include a catalogue of on-demand games, will be supported by “every major publisher” according to bigwig Jim Ryan, with conversations allegedly going well across the board.
He told Games Industry: “Whether it’s indies, whether it’s big games, or things that celebrate our heritage – all sorts of games – we are going to have all of it, and hopefully a line-up that ticks all sorts of boxes.” We already know some of the titles that will be included – like Returnal and Marvel’s Spider-Man – but much of the selection remains a secret for now.
PS Plus Premium will also include retro titles, spanning PS1, PS2, and PSP – although, unfortunately, PS3 will be restricted to streaming. Again, it’s unclear which classics will be available, but we’d like to think the platform holder has been schmoozing major publishers to get their catalogue across.
Unfortunately, the underlying problem with this announcement is Sony’s reluctance to share cold-hard facts. We have a rough idea of what the future holds for PS Plus now, which is good, but we’re still waiting for a clear roadmap of what content will be available and when. Given the company’s unpredictable approach to consumer relations, we could be waiting a while.

It seems safe to assume most of the games will be the current PS Now catalog – but it’s also apparent that it won’t be limited to that, as they already confirmed adding multiple first party games. I’m curious what it ends up being at launch and how it’s updated afterwards.
dschons
They should have at least given a few concrete examples, especially for the classics. A few select treats to get us excited and to look forward to.
DualWielding
The problem is Microsoft guarantees you something, Sony there’s no guarantee, it could be that the initial library of over 400 games is just whatever is on PS Now plus the games they have already offered as part of the monthly offerings and no guarantee as to whether they’ll be adding new PS5 games that have not been offered through the basic tier regularly
huyi
This is a problem where everything you buy now will be subscription based service, this is bad for the gaming industry and bad for us consumers! Maybe this is the reason I’m reluctant to buy a ps5 even with the extortion prices the fact that every game I buy on that console will demand money even when you pay the £70 price for the game, this is disgusting practice and I’m sure Jim sterling will blow this all up! 😤😤😤
Milktastrophe
The article title sounds like it would include the list of these publishers, so pretty disappointed that there’s not really new info here.

I hope after this announcement today people can finally move on. Is it just me or are gamers today extremely needy ? Always wanting more and wanting right now. No patience, no appreciation, it’s just never enough. I couldn’t care less about this ps plus service, but I’m sick of hearing people debate on it. It is what it is, and game pass is what it is also.
I think it would be great for the community if people just focus on the present, we just got Horizon, Elden Ring and Gran Turismo 7 and yet people are begging for a God of War Ragnarok state of play. Have you even let these games digest ? What’s the rush ? I couldn’t care less if God of War got delayed, just like Zelda got delayed today. I’m in no rush. People need to find patience and gratitude.
Snake_V5
I don’t think when it comes down to the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games that there going to be updating it with new games over time. Whatever games are there is what will always be there, no new additions. Only PS4 and PS5 are being updated over time with new games.
VatoLoco47
Australia doesn’t even get Premium
IonMagi
@VatoLoco47 You do, but without streaming. They said countries without PS Now at this time get a cheaper sub

There is going to come a time when ‘consoles’ are pretty much obsolete – at least if you want the ‘latest’ AAA games because the size (therefore storage and ‘physical’ distribution is an issue), the amount of processing power needed for AI, Physics etc are just not going to run on ‘local’ hardware limited to a ‘price point’ and the raw materials and distribution costs.
The money spent on ‘millions’ of consumer grade ‘hardware’ for global distribution is better spent on ‘much better’ super hardware running games of any size/complexity, enabling things you can only ‘dream’ about on ‘static’ hardware.
Whose going to make hardware when ALL the games look, run and feel better to play than is possible on ‘local’ hardware? Retro consoles will exist and I’m sure Nintendo will still do a ‘console’ of sorts. But selling a $500-$1k box when you can stream much ‘higher’ visual quality, much faster frame rates and lower input lag straight to whatever display you have. The only limitation is screen resolution and bandwidth but the game could still be running at 4k/120+ with Complex AI, Physics, Destruction, Ray Traced lighting etc etc – no compromises, no limit on ‘scale’ to fit on SSD’s in local hardware…
Everything has chips, so its a matter of time when its not sustainable to build ‘millions’ of consoles when ‘super computers’ running in the cloud are streaming the latest, greatest games direct to ‘everyone’ for a subscription fee…
Korgon
It would be particularly cool to see Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 make it through the PSP catalog. Nothing Sony can really do about the 3rd one but two of the three is still better than none at all.
VatoLoco47
@IonMagi Streaming was the main selling point of Premium. Although on some source’s say no PS3 Streaming but doesn’t clarify about PS1 and PS2 which is mainly what i prefer
Gaia093
Hope you bought the license for Yakuza Dead Souls as well, Kiryu.
itsfoz
You know what, I’m gonna be the idiot who believes Hogwarts Legacy will be a first day third party release.
theheadofabroom
@VatoLoco47 they’ll be downloadable, apparently.
AdamNovice
@Wasted_Smuggler Sadly too many want AAA blockbusters but are only willing to pay cheap prices for them.
Yanksfan70
It’s still 3 months away from going into effect, plenty of time to give out details along the way.
VatoLoco47
@theheadofabroom Oh perfect! Thanks for the clarification
Daleaf
@Wasted_Smuggler well said m8
Golem25
Need to see everyone single Yakuza game (or at least up until Judgment) on there so I can leave a few of my copies shrink-wrapped.
Lup
@Wasted_Smuggler
I’m not interested in any of those three games. So is it bad to want something I’ll like?
PhhhCough
I wonder if there will be a free trial
Chaotic_Goat
Ok no first party day one, fine but if they don’t have any day one indie and third party games like they did with Shadow Warrior then this is 100% pointless because the service won’t save me any money like gamepass does.
I’m in Canada and only three months into 2022 gamepass has already gave me 200$ (before any taxes) worth of games that I’d have bought day one or close to. Add to that Sniper Elite 5, Atomic Heart, Starfield, Plague Tale: Requiem, Trek To Yomi, Stalker 2, all day one GP releases and the value is just insane.
If what Sony has to compete with that are old gen games and demos then no thanks
Wasted_Smuggler
@Lup it is not bad at all to want something you like and I only used those games as an example because they came out recently, you don’t have to like those games either. My argument is that gamers are just too inpatient. I don’t know what game it is that you’re personally looking forward to next, but it will get here when it does, there’s no need to keep anticipating it and wanting updates on it asap.
I also brought up God of War because lately under any Santa Monica tweet there is an army of people complaining about a release date, which goes back to my original point: It will release when it’s ready to release, just be patient. I guess its hard for some people to be patient. I personally can wait.
WallyWest
@BAMozzy I get your point but the PS4 has 100m+ sales, the Switch will overtake that no doubt and PS5’s and Series X’s are huge in demand consoles with the PS5 already having strong sales. As long as the audience is there consoles will exist. Also streaming games right now is just not viable nor is it something people are embracing, i’ve been using XCloud a lot since it appeared on Xbox and the hit in visuals is noticeable and the slightest lag can harm something like Halo or Gears. Give it 10 years we might be there but it being the standard i doubt will come for a very very long time. Also you seen the cloud games on Switch? Its awful as hell, GotG looks like a rough alpha E3 demo on it because its that bad.
Tharsman
The best I can say about this announcement is that my reaction is the same as the original GamePass reaction for me: meh, don’t care.
GamePass earned its place in my gaming life by delivering, and delivering big. It will take years of consistent delivery for me to care about these plans.
Dalejrfanfreak
Alternate Headline: major publishers very happy to put old games on PS Plus service.
BAMozzy
@WallyWest think of it more like having an XB1S and trying to play MSFS without an online connection – that game would need ‘huge’ storage to hold the data needed for the entire world and some clever way to simulate ‘real world’ weather let alone running the game to begin with – the only way to play it is with streaming- on Series X you still need ‘online’ for the freedom to fly anywhere…
Games will no doubt rely more and more in the cloud to handle data storage/distribution issues (you already see games requiring online downloads to get the ‘complete’ game because its to big to fit all on a disc), Complex AI, Physics/Destruction etc etc can take a LOT of pressure off a relatively ‘cheap’ APU processor that’s already being pushed to deliver 4k visuals at 60fps and with more than a tick box use of Ray Tracing.
All that without pop-in, AI that behaves more ‘naturally’, not see the ‘exact same’ animations with different bodies in every village, actually see people ‘work’ with actual progress, worlds that ‘evolve’ and grow naturally over time, not static, plants that move properly, hair/fur/clothing etc that doesn’t clip or do odd things when using the cloud and streaming offers that because its in the cloud, not limited by a small box in your room.
The number of high speed super CPU cores, GPU cores, Speciality cores (audio, Ray tracing etc), the amount of ‘RAM’ they could have access too to run games at the very highest visual quality and frame rates, which also reduces input lag. much more than using that time and money to offer an ‘affordable’ device for a version that ‘looks and runs’ much worse, and requires online to do the AI and Physics otherwise it wouldn’t run at all…
mvhess
@Wasted_Smuggler Thank you. How many hours a day are these people playing games that they aren’t satisfied. I’m still enjoying Elden Ring and will be looking forward to a break.
Frankly, whatever the service is, I’ll check it out and if I like it, I’ll get it… If not, oh well. I’m happy to support most of Sony’s first party studios as they are generally wonderful to their fans. Sucker Punch, Insomniac, Santa Monica and Naughty Dog always deliver and celebrate the community. If one of the other studios delivers a great game, well all the better but I don’t understand nit picking and complaining about every little thing.
Wasted_Smuggler
@mvhess right !? Honestly, people are spending more time complaining to developers about release dates and gameplay than they are actually playing and enjoying games. They complain about buggy, messy unfinished games yet they still want games done as fast as possible. You can’t have the best of both worlds, you got to be patient in this industry. Horizon and Elden Ring have so much content, if you really want to 100% each game it can easily last you until the end of summer.
I’m not even anticipating the next State of Play, I’m too busy actually playing my games and enjoying them. Whenever a games ready to be shown, that’s cool, but I’m not counting down the days. Just enjoy what you already have, it takes around 4-5 years now to create and release a AAA game, give developers their space. I guess most people are always chasing the next best thing right away.
rival_fight
@Korgon For sure. With all of Cold Steel at home on the PS4/5 and Crossbell + plus spinoff titles on the way, it would be heaven for the Liberl arc to land on modern consoles.
iamtylerdurden1
@DualWielding The is that game pass has been around for years and PlayStation Plus premium doesn’t start until June……
This was literally the first announcement and they already tossed out three major games. Even the article here claims that Sony is making a huge effort to improve the offerings so why would you think it’s only going to be whatever is on PlayStation now?
Maybe wait until they give us more information before polishing Microsoft’s knob and doubting Sony?
iamtylerdurden1
@huyi What are you even saying and the fact that four people agreed with you is abhorrent. I feel like I am living in bizarro World sometimes.
You are complaining about services and then complaining about full price games in the same breath? Or in your incoherent rant where you trying to refer to games as a service?
Yeah because every PlayStation game is a game as a service just like forbidden West and God of War two of the three major exclusives releasing this year. Tf is wrong with people?
KidBoruto
Great news that they are all mostly onboard for this .
